Island Hopping in Krabi: The Honest Guide
After two decades of guiding visitors around Krabi's extraordinary archipelago, I have seen the full spectrum of island-hopping experiences — from transcendent days that change people's lives, to overcrowded group tours that leave travelers exhausted and disappointed.
Here is what I wish every visitor knew before they booked.
The Main Routes: A Comparison
The Classic 4 Islands Tour
Visits Koh Poda, Tup Island (with its famous sandbar), Chicken Island, and Phra Nang Cave Beach. This is Krabi's most iconic island route for good reason — the variety is extraordinary. The sandbar at Tup Island is one of the most photographed places in all of Thailand. However, on group speedboats during peak season, you share these spots with hundreds of other tourists. Our private version visits the same islands — but we time arrivals perfectly to avoid the crowds.
Hong Island (Koh Hong)
Hong Island offers Krabi's single most spectacular natural feature: the hidden inner lagoon. Enclosed entirely by towering limestone cliffs, the lagoon's water is a shade of green-blue that doesn't look real. Snorkeling here, you float above some of the healthiest hard coral in the Andaman. This tour is best done as a full-day private excursion — the island deserves your full attention.
Phi Phi and Maya Bay
Technically in Krabi province, these islands are magnificent but heavily visited. Maya Bay — made famous by The Beach — reopened after ecological restoration with strict visitor limits. I recommend visiting on a private speedboat departing early (6:30–7:00am) to reach Maya Bay before the larger group boats arrive. The difference is extraordinary.
Speedboat vs. Longtail: Which is Right for You?
Speedboats are faster and more comfortable for longer distances (Phi Phi, Hong Island). Traditional longtail boats are an authentic Thai experience — slower and more intimate, perfect for the 4 Islands or coastal exploration. For many private tours, we combine a speedboat outward journey with a longtail coastal cruise on the return.
When to Go
Peak season (Dec–Feb): The absolute best conditions. Book 1–2 weeks in advance.
Shoulder season (Mar–Apr, Oct–Nov): Excellent conditions, fewer crowds, better pricing.
Monsoon (May–Sep): Many routes modified due to weather. Contact us for current conditions.
The Private Difference
A private tour is not a luxury — it is simply the right way to experience these places. You choose the pace. You linger at the sandbar. You choose lunch. You experience Krabi as it was meant to be experienced.
